Hermiston Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname appears to have sprung from two localities: (1) from the lands of Hermiston (old Hirdemaneston) in the old barony of Lilliesleaf, and (2) from the barony of Herdmanston in East Lothian, but mainly from the former place. Alexander de Hirdmanestun witnessed a charter by Jocelin, bishop of Glasgow confirming the grant of the church of Puloc to the church of Paisley c. 1177—99 (RMP., p. 99,101). In 1202 he also witnessed a charter of the land called Schotteschales in the territory of Lilliesleaf (REG., 99). Johan de Hirdmanston or Hirdmanestone of the county of Berewyke rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears a merlin perched on a gloved hand, and S' lohi's de Hirdmainston (Bain, II, p. 185,200). Alexander de Hirmanestone of the county of Rokesburk also rendered homage, and in 1305 he was juror on an inquisition made at Selkirk (ibid., 1681 and p. 209). Some years later the lands of Hermiston in Lilliesleaf seem to have passed from possession of the family to William de Stapilton in 1349 (Rot. Scot., I, p. 728). The surname was early carried to the north. Andrew Hiidmanniston, archdeacon of Caithness, witnessed the settlement of a controversy in 1328 (REM., p. 152), and in the following year provision was made of a deanery of Moray to Master Andrew de Hirdmannstron (Pap. Lett., II, p. 298). In 1368 Mariota de Hirdmannystoun, daughter of the deceased Andrew of Hirdmannystoun, quitclaimed 6 marks of yearly revenue of Tarbat Ross (OPS., 71. p. 443). David Hermiston was tenant in the toune of Reddene in 1567 (Kelso, p. 521), and Marion Hermistone is recorded in Fogoe in 1690 (Lauder). Hirdmeston 1566.
