From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the town of Hertford in the county of the same name in the south of England. The family of this name in Renfrewshire were vassals of the Stewarts or FitzAlans. Robertus Hertford, precentor Glasguensis, with the consent of Galfridus, his nephew and heir, granted the fishery of Lynbren in the Lennox to the church of Paisley, a 1225 (RMP., p. 211—212). Robert Herthford had a charter "de terra illa que dicitur Dalmaunach" from Maldovenus, earl of Levenax, a. 1224 (ibid., p. 217), and in 1228 Duugallus filius Alwyn, earl of Levenax made to Robert Hertford a gift of the land called Dollenlenrach to be held by him and his heirs (ibid., p. 214,215). William de Hertford granted the church of Neleston to the monastery of Paisley c. 1230 (ibid., p. 104). The name appears to have early died out in Scotland.
