These two terms combined thus refer to a leader with a sword. Other interpretations of the surname elude to "Field of Swords" or "Big Sword." It is interesting to note that Hesselschwerdt / Hesselschwardt is most commonly connected to Leimersheim, Germany. Leimersheim is located in the southern Bavarian region of Germany. During the middle ages this area was known for both sword making and for its schools related to the art of sword fighting.
