(Celtic + Latin) for Exeter, the Anglo-Saxon Exa(n)ceaster=the (Roman) City of the Exe [the Welsh name was Caer Isc, ‘the fort on the Isc,’ Isc (now Exe) representing the Old Celtic word seen in the Irish uisce (pron. iska), Gaelic uisge, Welsh wysg, water, stream: Old English ceaster, a city, Latin castra, a camp] The H- would be added to this name when its origin had been forgotten.
