Heyman Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from an official title, 'the hayman', equivalent to Hayward or Heyward, which see. (a) Bapt. — the son of Hamon' or 'Hammon,' which see. The 'd' in Hammond is excrescent. There can be little doubt that almost all our Haymans are descended from the once very popular personal name of Hamon. The corruption is purely imitative; for instance, we find a bailiff of Yarmouth, who occupied the office in two separate years, entered as follows:
1450. Haman Pulham: History of Norfolk.
1454. Hamon Pulham: ibid.
In 1445, also, he is entered Haman; in 1459, Hamon; and in 1465, Haman. There can be no hesitation in accepting this derivation.
1636. Francis Spicer, cordwainer, and Elizabeth Heyman: Marriage Lic. (London).
1682. Married — Peetur Heyman and Mary Browne: St. James, Clerkenwell.
See Hyman the Dict.
“Heath Dweller” in Dutch, i.e. Dweller on a Moor (Heyde). Compare German Heidemann. See also Chaim.
(German) Descendant of Hagimar (hedged place, famous); variants of Heiman, q.v.
(from the name of a male ancestor) The first four letters of these names indicate the name Hayyim.
Hay signifies both a hedge and what it encloses; hence Hayman and Hayer probably sometimes mean the same as Hayward. But the Irish family of Hayman or Heyman deduce their pedigree from Rollo, the founder of Normandy, through the Crevecoeurs, one of whom, Haimon de C., had a son Robert, who assumed his father's baptismal name as a surname, which he transmitted to his posterity. B.L.G.
(Saxon.) A high man, or may be the same as Hayward (which see).
(Saxon.) A high man.
