Hickinbottom Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of the Higginbottom,' a small spot, now, I believe, obsolete titularly, in the neighbourhood of Marple and Macclesfield, in East Cheshire.

The meaning, no doubt, is the bottom, or hollow deprei lion in the land, where Higgin or Hickin resided; v. Higgin, Hickin, and Higg. In Mr. Earwaker 5 History East Cheshire appear the names of John Rowbothome, Jol fil. Sidebothome, and Ottiwell Heginbothome, as owners of land in 1670. There is no doubt this is the district where several of our most familiar surnames with suffix -bottom arose; v. Shufflebottom, Sidebotton, Longbottom, and Rowbottom; also v. Botham.

John Hyggynbothom. 1563: Reg. Prestbury Church, Cheshire.

Nicholas Hichinbothome, of Marple. gent., 1579: Earwaker's East Cheshire.

Alice Higginbotham, of Marple, 1595: Lancashire, and Cheshire Record Society.

1762. Married — Joseph Higenbotom and Sarah Bacon: St. George, Hanover Square.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Following a writer in Gent. Mag. Oct., 1820, I have elsewhere suggested that this strange word might be Ickenlaum, O. Germ, for oak tree. Another etymology assigned was hickin, a Lancashire provincialism for the mountain ash, and bottom, a low ground or valley. A correspondent suggests its identity with the Dutch family name Hoogenboom, which signifies "high tree," either from the first bearer's residence near one, or a sobriquet allusive to stature.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

A corruption of the German name, Ickenbaum, that is, oak—tree.
