Of local origin from Huddleston in the parish of Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire. James Hedilstone was dempster in barony of Carnwath, 1534 (CBBC., p. 158). Thomas Hiddilstoun was a tailor in Edinburgh in 1609 (Edinb. Marr.), Roger Hiddelstoun held land in the barony of Dinscoire, 1688 (Retours, Dumfriesshire, 323), William Hidleston in St. John's Clachan is in record in 1703 (Kirkcudbright), and Robert Huddleston, schoolmaster in Lunan in Angus, edited the Montrose edition of Toland's Druids, 1814, There is also a Huddleston in the parish of Sherburn in the West Riding of Yorkshire from which the Dumfriesshire place name may have been borrowed.
