An old surname about Glasgow. Of local origin, perhaps from Highgate, near Beith, Ayrshire. Highet is a variant. Johne Hechet was burgess of Glasgow in 1527 (Pollok, I, p. 256). William Higait or Hegait, notary in Glasgow, 1547—55 (Protocols, I) appears as burgess there in 1562 (RPC., I, p. 214), and as William Highgate, town clerk, was charged with using injurious words to a bailie, 1564 (RPC., I, p. 302). William Hegait or Heched was burgess of Glasgow in 1574 (Pollok, I, p. 309,311), Archibald Highgate or Hiegat was member of Scots parliament for Glasgow, 1586 (Hanna, II, p. 498), Archibald Heygait was clerk of the burgh of Glasgow in 1609 (MCM., II, p. 395), and Gilbert Heighat pursued another for debt in 1675 (Corsehill, p. 127). Hechat 1540, Heychat 1541, Highet 1706.
