For Hilary, q.v.
Derived from the Latin hilarius (cheerful), is an English name well known in Co. Clare. There is no basis for the statement that it is an anglicized form of Ó hIrghile, i.e. Hirelly, a very rare name. SIF 89
Hillary is derived from the Latin word hilarius (cheerful) and is associated with East Anglia. It is the christian name of several saints, from one of whom Mount Hilary in Co. Cork is called. As a surname it is not numerous in Ireland: as far as this country is concerned it is now associated mainly with west Clare, whence comes Dr. Patrick Hillery, present Minister for Education. Four freeholders of the name are given in the Clare freeholders of 1821 in the barony of Ibrickane. In the eighteenth century some Leinster wills are recorded for the name Hillary. The only reference I have met before that is a Co. Armagh householder, unless we accept le Helier of which there is an isolated example in 1290.
Ó hlrghile has been given as the Irish form of Hillary, but this appears to be based on no authentic evidence: Ó hlrghile is properly anglicized Hirelly, but this is a very rare name: Hirell, however is fairly well known in the Inishowen peninsula, Co. Donegal, which contains Malin Head, the most northerly point in Ireland (incidentally that point is not in the territory officially known as “Northern Ireland”).
These names are actually variants of O'Friel.
From St. Hilary, Normandy. Jane, Hubert, Peter, Ralph de St. Hilary, 1180-98 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). The Baronets Hillary are of this family.
