Hinderer Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

One possible origin for the name: the person called with this surname lived "hinter der Stadtmauer" which means behind the town wall (seen from inside) or "hinter dem / hinten im Dorf" which means "outside / on the outskirts of the village". Similar to English, if you want to convert a word to a subject for a (male) person, you ad "er" in German (e.g.: mill, Miller). So, the one who lives "hinter (der Stadtmauer)" becomes "Hint(d)erer". As this name is widespread in nowadays rural regions of Schwaben (Swabia in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany), "i" (in Germany pronounced like the English "e") commonly is pronounced as "e" (like the "e" in "Henderson" or "bench").

Might also derive from the German word "Hintersasse", medieval peasants without country estrate which only owned a non-fortified house, a garden or a single field. They depended on their overlord both for more land to cultivate and for reasons of defense as they usually lived in detached houses outside of town walls - which would be a commonality to possibility one.

In both cases, these were poor people, struggling both to survive and to scrape together the thith for their overlord, in constant risk of losing their very last property due to failed harvest or disease.
