This is one of the anglicized forms of Ó hIongardail, which has for the most part become Harrington, q.v. SIF 90
Woulfe, quoting the obsolete form O'Hanortye, equates this with the modern Hingerty and regards them as variants of O'Finaghty. I do not accept this. I think Hingerty derives from one of the early Gaelic surnames which for the most part became in due course Harrington. Fairly conclusive evidence of this is afforded by Elizabethan Fiant 3082 in which John MacTeige O'Hengerltye of Dunbeacon, Co. Cork, is described as alias Harrington: that was in 1577. Hingerty occurs twice in the Co. Tipperary hearth money rolls of 1664. It is now rare.
