This surname is derived from an official title. 'the henchman,' a horseman (not haunch-man, v. Skeat), a groom, from Anglo-Saxon hengesl, a horse. An Act passed in 1463 to restrain excess in apparel makes an exception in favour of 'Hensmen, Heroldes, Purceyvantes, Swerdeberers, as Maires, Messagers, and Minstrelles' (Stat. Realm).
