A surname confined mainly to Angus. Part of the vill of Baldovy was leased to David Yrnis or Irnys and Agnes his spouse 1485 and 1500 (RAA., II, p. 220,407). William Irnis was tenant under the Abbey of Arbroath, 1506 (ibid., 452). Johannes Imys, his wife and son, Jacobus Irnys, had a lease of part of the vill of Kynclune, 1535 (ibid., p. 526), and Sir James Irnis was notary public in Perth, 1546 (Rollok, 44). Eufamie Yrnis was spouse to John Farie in Dundee, 1586 (REB., II, 354), and Elizabeth Irons appears in Myresyde of Cannedy, parish of Meigte, 1690 (Dunkeld). Irones 1695, Yrnes 1526.
