Persons named Robert were commonly known as Hab, Hob, Habbie, and Hobbie according to the part of the country in which they resided. Hab and Habbie were more common in the west ('Habbie Simpson') and Hob and Hobbie on the Border. Hobe Bald, Hobe Heslop, Hob Hog, and Hobe Petersone were all tenants on lands of the Abbey of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 520—522). Hobbe witnessed resignation of land in Kelso, 1237 (ibid., 355), and Simon Hob was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1443 (NSCM., I, p. 8). Habbe Anderson in Dumfriesshire, 1557 (M' Dowell, Lincluden, p. 111). Robert Grieve alias Hob Grieve in Lauder, was accused of witchcraft, 1649 (Sinclar, Satan's invisible world discovered, 1871, p. 45—56). Edward I in an angry letter (Nat. MSS., II, p. xiii) calls Bruce "King Hobbe." Hobbie, from Hob(b) + diminutive suffix -ie.
