As there does not appear to have been a barony of Hobkirk (OPS., I, p. 351) the name is of local origin from Hobkirk, the local pronunciation of Hopekirk, near Hawick, Roxburghshire. James Hopkirk, reidare at Caringtoun, 1574 (RMR.). James Habkirk, surgeon in Edinburgh, is in record in 1690 (Edinb, Marr.). Francis Hopkirk is recorded in the parish of Cranstoun, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 206), and William Hopkirk in Melrose, 1690 (RRM., III, p. 109). James Hobkirk from Cavers, exiled Covenanter, was drowned off Orkney, 1679 (Hanna, II, p. 254). William Hopkirk, late belt maker in Edinburgh, 1726 (Guildry, p. 131).
