(a) Official, 'the hobman,' probably for hobbyman, one who looked to or rode a hobby, a small horse; Old French hobin; compare Palfreyman. 'For x hobyes, and palfreys' (Wardrobe Account, Edward IV). Hence 'to ride a hobby.'
