This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Hockday.' An ecclesiastical festival commencing the fifteenth day after Easter, styled Hokeday or Hocktide. The feast ceased to be observed after the Reformation (v. Brand's Pop. Ant.) The child would be so named from being born or baptized during this festival; compare Christmas, Pask, Nowell, Pentecost, Whitsunday, &c. Pentecost is still a baptismal name in Cornwall, or was up to the beginning of the present century. The 'a' in Hockaday is intrusive; compare Green-a-way, Ott-a-way, &c.
