From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the old lands of Hoddam in the parish of the same name, Dumfriesshire. Odard de Hodolm witnessed a confirmation charter of a fishery in Torduf, c. 1194—1211 (Holm Cultram, p. 35), and as Udard de Hodelma or Hodalmia he, along with Robert de Hodalmia, witnessed between the same dates a resignation of land in Weremundebi and Anant (Bain, I, 606; Annandale, I, p. 1—3). He may also have been the Hudardus de Hodelma who witnessed the gift by Huctred filius Fergus to the Hospital of S. Peter of York, c. 1158—1164 (Edgar, p. 219). Robert de Hodolm of the county of Roxburgh rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears a crow or jackdaw and S' Rob'ti d' Hodolm (Bain, II, p. 199,550). Adam de Hodolm of the county of Dunfres also rendered homage in the same year. His seal bears a rude figure of an animal and S' Ade de Hodvme (ibid., II, p. 203,555). Adam de Hodholme possessed part of the lands of the town and tenement of Kirkborthwyc, c. 1320 (RMS., I, 20), and Adam de Holdena, rector of the church of Kirkepatrik-domando, witnessed the gift of half of Litel Gouan to the Hospital of Polmade (Polmadie) in 1320 (REG., p. 229). Robert Hoddome was retoured heir of George Hoddome burgess of Edinburgh in 1632 (Retours, Edinburgh, 705), James Hoddom is in record in Symontoun in 1638 (Lanark CR.), and John Hoddam in Bernesyde, 1693 (Dumfries).
