Hodge’s Son: v. Hodge.
Son of Hodge (q.v.).
(Welsh, English) Descendant of Hodge, a pet form of Roger (fame, spear).
The son of Hodge or Boger. This name in the North of England is pronounced Hodgin, while in the South it has taken not only the pronunciation, but the spelling, of Hodson or Hudson. The name of Hodgson is ancient at Newcastleupon-Tyne, being found in records of temp. Edward I., and the Hodgsons of Stella and Acton, co. Northumberland, trace a clear pedigree to 1424.
From the Old Norse, Odd-geirr; in the Domesday Book, Oger; a personal name.
The Hodgsons are at present most numerous in this county and in the adjacent parts of Yorkshire. As far back as the 15th century they were more numerous in Northumberland than they are at present.
User-submitted Reference
Dates back to 1604 with the arrival in the US of Nicholas Hodsdon, who also spelt his name Hodgdon (or his name was spelt by another as Hodgdon), possibly reflecting pronunciation at the time. Origin is questionable due to extreme age of the name and its roots (Hodsdon/Hodgdon) in Anglo-Saxon Northumbria and possible sound changes in the development of the English language from the time of the Danelaw and subsequent Norman Conquest to the present time. Possible origin is from Saxon Hrodgarsson, meaning 'son of fame-spear', corrupted to Hrothgarsson (son of truth spear), eventually becoming Hodgesson or Hodgedon (Hodge's Hill, Hodge being an alternate form of a dimunutive of Roger, the name that Hrodgar developed into). Again, due to age, most of this is speculation based on patterns of regular sound change in the English language.
