User-submitted Reference
Hodson or Hodsson is a northern surname, most numerous in Preston, Lancashire in the 1881 census. It is a patronymic surname of Old Norse origin, which means 'son of Hod', 'son of Hodr' or 'son of Odd'. Hod and Hodr mean 'warrior' in Old Norse and also they are two ways of spelling the name of the Old Norse god (Hodr, a son of Odin), who shot and killed Baldr in the Eddas. There are many Hodson families across England, with populous areas including Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Staffordshire and even an old branch in Cambridgeshire. Therefore, it is unlikely all Hodson families share the same surname origin and meaning or descend from the same person or group.
