Hogben Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. I have no solution to offer. Mr. Lower writes, 'Probably a pig stye, from hog, and bin, a crib, a hutch. This Kentish surname was probably applied in the first instance to a swineherd' (Patronymica Britannica). According to this suggestion the origin of Hogben is local, 'at the hog-bin.' This, of course, is very unsatisfactory. No evidence is advanced. I cannot help thinking it is an immigrant from the Low Countries. I find no early trace of it.
1786. Married — Samuel Ardron and Mary Bellamy Hogben: St. George, Hanover Square.
1807. — John Francis Bonnet and Frances Hogben: ibid.
1 Dweller at the Hog-Pen [v. Hog(g, and + Middle English pen, O.E, penn, a fold, enclosure; with p voiced to b in the name through the influence of the preceding voiced letter g] 2 poss. also a metathesized form of Hobgen (q.v.) with guttural g.
“Oak Hill” in Gaelic. See Ogg.
Probably a pigstye; from hog, and bin, a crib or hutch. Anglo-Saxon This Kentish surname was probably applied in the first instance to a swineherd.
From the Swedish, Hagerbonn; in the Domesday Book, Haghebern; a personal name.$
Mr. Hogben, who owned the Copthall estate in Aldington parish about two centuries ago, may be an ancestor of the present Hogbens and Hogbins. In 1712, Thomas Hogben of Aldington left bequests to the poor; and in 1737 Mr. John Hogben of Ash (where the surname still remains) owned property in Windingswold parish (H.).
User-submitted Reference
It has been surmised that the name Hogben has something to do with pig farming. It is one of the most common surnames in Kent County, England, especially in the area of Elham and Lyminge. However, the earlier spellings of the name (i.e., Huckbone) hint at an Old English meaning with changes in spelling occurring after the Norman Invasion of 1066. The Old English root hug, hyg means 'spirit, courage'. I theorize that bone may have come into the English language through the Roman invasion, from bonus, bene meaning 'good/well'. Then with the Norman invasion, the spelling may have changed to a French form, bene related to the French bien. Thus, I theorize that the name means 'good spirit' or 'good courage'.
My ancestor, known only as Huckbone, was born in Kent in 995 AD before the Norman invasion, but the name goes back at least to the 600s AD. Huckbone's son, Oswald Hugbene (1020-1069), changed the spelling of his name but it is not known when he made the change. It is possible that he adopted a more French-sounding name in his late forties upon the occasion of the Norman Conquest.
According to Wikipedia, examples of other Old English (Anglo-Saxon, Old Norse, and Proto-German) names using the root hug, hyg are Hugibald, Hugabert, Hygelac, Adalhug, and Kerhuge. The article mentions Hygelac, King of the Geats (d. 516 AD), mentioned in the epic Beowulf. There is no doubt that the Huckbone/Hugbene family of the Middle Ages had a full knowledge of the events, names, name meanings and Kentish place names that appear in Beowulf.
