From ME. hogherde, one in charge of hogs i.e. young sheep. Henry Hoggart witnessed an instrument of sasine, 1525 (Home, 35), and Robert Hoghyrd was a witness in Dunfermline, 1555 (Laing, 633). A commission was appointed in 1562 for trial of Robert Hoggart (ER., XIX, p. 496). George Hoggart or Huggart was a pensioner of Thirlestane Hospital in 1676 (Thomson, Lauderdale, p. 71). The surname was common in Stitchill and neighborhood in the seventeenth century as Haggeard, Hoggart, Hoggeart, Hoggearth, Hoggearthe, and Hoggard (Stitchill). Hogard 1676, Hogeard 1666.
