This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of the hollins head,' i.e. one who dwelt at the head of the hollin-bushes; compare Akenhead (the head of the oaks), Birkenhead, and Birkett - Birkhead (the head of the birches). A resident by the side of the oaks gave us Akenside, which see: -head and -side are common suffixes to local names of this class. The form Holinshead was made early immortal by the Chronicler. East Cheshire has given birth to a large number of Hollingsheads from some immediate locality of that name. v. Hollins.
