Probably this last entry represents the Anglo-Saxon halig, holy, pure; later on found as halt or holi. Pure and healthy springs would, no doubt, all over the country take a name after the character of the water, being whole or whole-some— not necessarily sacred or holy, as the word is now understood.
Of local origin, perhaps from Halywell mentioned in Berwick Retours. Thomas de Halywell was supprior of the Abbey of Kelso, 1465 (Kelso, 530), and Robert Halywell was notary public in St, Andrews diocese, 1473 (RHM., II, p. 220). Thomas Halywell, a Scot born at Grynlawe, in 1480 had letters of denization in England (Bain, IV, 1465), John Halywell was killed in 1535 (RSS., II, 1642.), and William Halywell was burgess of Linlithgow, 1537 (Johnsoun). Janet Hallywell is recorded in Dalcove, 1668 (Lauder), Robert Halliwall, portioner of Darnick, 1683 (RRM., III, p. 8), and Arthur Hollivall in Manorhill, 1690 (Peebles CR.). Haliewooll 1651, Halliewooll 1656, Halliwoll 1660, Hallowall 1681, Holiewall 1644.
(English) 1 Dweller at the Holly- Tree Well [v. under Hollay, Holley, and + Middle English welle, Old English wella, a spring, well] 2 confused with Holywell: v. Halliwell.
"The Holy Well"-a name given to many sacred fountains in the middle ages; but specifically applied to parishes and places in Lancashire, Middlesex, &c.
An old family of Halliwell once lived at Pike House, Spotland; W. Halliwell was minister of Holme in 1793 (W. W.). There is a Lancashire township of the name.
