A Holowach is a ceremony for naming a Jewish baby girl, comparable to the circumcision of a Jewish baby boy. It takes place usually in the home and friends and family are invited. I am not sure how widespread the custom was but in my mother's home town of Sterbfritz in the Sinnthal in Hessen Germany this was the procedure for the birth of a baby girl. My mother was the 5th daughter and last child born to her parents who grumbled about having to have five of these celebrations and no circumcision or Brith Milah as they had no sons. The Sinnthal was settled in the early 17th century by Jews and Huguenots and the origin just might have been French, but it doesn't sound like any French or German word I can think of.
