From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Richard,' from the nick. Hud or Hood, as suggested by the writer of the article 'Robin Hood,' Encyc. Brit. (vol. xx.., edit. 1886). But Hud is not a nick, of Odo, as he asserts, following Lower (Patronymica Britannica; v. Hood), but of Richard. For proofs, v. Hudd. The entries of Hud are endless in old rolls and records. It must not be forgotten that 'A Lytell Geste of Robin Hode' spells it thus, which is not far from Hud in sound.

Huda in Old English is a shortened personal name. The leader of the Surrey men in A.D. 853 was named Huda (Anglo-Saxon Chron., s.a.). A composition between Andrew, bishop of Moray and Robert Hude (or Hod) relating to the manor of Lamanbrid was made in 1225 (REM., p. 459—460). Robertus Hud of Leth (Leith), witness in an Inchcolm charter c, 1220—26 (Inchcolm, p. 12). Robertus Hod received a payment from the sheriff of Aberdeen, 1264 (ER,, I, p. 12). Johannes Hode was burgess of the vill of Forays, 1332 (RAA., II, 14). David Hude or Huyd appears as vicar of Luntrathyne or Luntrethyn, 1447—52 (REB., I, 153; II, 67), and John Hude was vicar of Abernyte, 1467 (View, p. 576). Michael Hud was tenant on lands of the Abbey of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 528). Hwid 1574.
