Historically in The Netherlands some dairy farming families selected the last name Hooykaas to represent the feed cows were given, and cheese to represent the main produce of these animals.
These last names originated when Napoleon and the French occupied the Netherlands. The Dutch did not historically have surnames and the French required them to be created for taxation and census purposes. Many of the Dutch were not happy with being forced to take on last names and typically did not give much thought to their surnames. In some cases the Dutch even selected offensive/derogatory last names as a form of rebellion.
