The Puritan font-name Hopewell came too late to influence surnames, but. failing evidence in favour of a local origin, it might be an early nick nam' for one of a hopeful disposition. Nevertheless, although I find no trace of the surname in Derbyshire, it must be remembered that Hopewell is a liberty in the parish of Sawley in that county.
