Lower, Bardsley, Harrison, and Weekley explain this name as 'hopper,' dancer at a fair or festival. Robert Hopper received the acre of land called Stampardesakyr in the territory of Coldingham, and in 1275 witnessed a charter of lands in Raynigton to the Abbey of Coldstream (Raine, 282,387). The name of a burgess family of good standing in Edinburgh from beginning of the fifteenth century (Stodart). David Hopper held a tenement in the burgh in 1486 (RMS., II, 1655), and Adam Hoppar was a notary public in the diocese of St. Andrews in 1524. Henry Hoppare witnessed a charter by Andrew, abbot of Melrose in 1540 (RRM., III, p. 225), Henry Hoppar was tenant of Westbarns in 1559 (ER,, XIX, p. 402), and John Hoppar of Coldingham is recorded in 1593 (Laing, 1254). James Hopper of Bourhouss appears in 1628 (Inguis., 1388), Thomas Hopper in Caikilaw in 1668 and Thomas Happer in Caikilaw or Crakilaw, in 1687, perhaps the same person (Lauder). Hoppert 1581.
