This surname is derived from a geographical locality. This looks uncommonly like a nickname, but I cannot help thinking it is an imitative corruption of Harbottle, which see. It is found in Lincolnshire and Norfolk. In 1581 John Harbottle was bailiff of Yarmouth (v. FF. xi. 328). Additional evidence in favour of this view is found in the fact that Arbuckle is one of the familiar surnames in Northumberland, where Harbottle lies; v. Arbuckle.
