The first recorded ancestor is John de Hornyold, temp. Edward III. Local place unknown' (Patronymica Britannica). Of course it is Horninghold in Leicestershire, the settlement of the family of Horn (v. Horn); compare the place-names Horningsea, Horninglow, Horningsham, Horningsheath, or Horningtoft.
