(from a place name) Horowitz and all of its many variations in spelling is taken from the Bohemian town of Horovice, where the first Horowitz family originated in the fifteenth century. Horwitz, Gorwitz, Gurvich, and Urevich are common variants. As in the case of all famous family names, Horowitz was adopted by many Jews who had no relationship to the original branches.
