Horsburgh Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Of territorial origin from the old ten pound land of the same name in the parish of Innerleithen, Peeblesshire. Horsabroc occurs in an Old English charter (Kemble, Codex Diplomaticus, III, 397). "The first of the race is believed to have been an Anglo-Saxon, designated Horse or Orse, who, settling on lands on the north bank of the Tweed, there reared the castle or burg which communicated the present surname to his descendants' (Chambers, Peeblesshire, p. 373). The earliest record of the name, however, is in the reign of Alexander II (1214—49), when Symon de Horsbroc witnessed a charter by William Purveys of Mospennoc to the monks of Melrose (Melros, p. 215). William de Horsebroch, "clericus decani et capellani Ecclesie de Glasguensis," is in record in 1283 (REG., 234). William de Horsbroch, probably the same person, was a notary public in 1287 (CMN., 23). Simon de Horsbrok, who entered the foreign service of Edward I of England in 1297, had his lands restored to him in that year (Bain, II, 952). He is mentioned again in the years 1302 and 1304 as holding his lands of the same king (ibid., p. 424,428). Master Michael de Horsbrok, a priest, witnessed a grant by Sir William of Durem, knight, of certain burgage lands in Peebles between 1306 and 1330 (Metros, p. 378), and William de Horsbrok was a bailie of the burgh in 1329 (ER., I, p. 826). Simon Horsbroke was one of the archers of the East March of Scodand in 1404 (Bain, IV, 669), and in 1440 Robert Horsbruk was "tercius prior" of St. Andrews (RD., p. 300). Alexander Horsbruk of that Ilk appears in 1479 (ALA., p. 76, 86), and in 1550 another Alexander Horsbruik was served heir of John Horsbruik, his father, in the lands and mill of Horsbruik of old extent of ten merks (Retours, Peeblesshire, 6). An illustration of the old house or castle of Nether Horsburgh is given by Chambers (Peeblesshire, p. 374). Other old forms of the surname are Horsbrook 1640, Horsborrough 1686, Horsburche 1620. The local pronunciation is Horsbra.
