A common northern Scots surname and an old one in the Inverness and Cromarty districts. Alexander Hossack appears in Inverness in 1508, but the origin of the name says Macbain (v, p. 77) is obscure. It may be local. compare Hossack, the name given to the east mouth of the Thurso river. John Hossok was a tenant in the Castletoun of Ardmanoch, 1504 (ER., XII, p. 661), and William Hosak and Andreas Hosak were tenants there in 1539 (ibid., XVII, p. 680). William Hossoke was tenant of Akinhede in the barony of Kynnedour in 3565 (REM., p. 438), and sheep were stolen from Robert Hosak in the regality of Spynie, 1595 (SCM., II, p. 129). Cristiane Hosack in the "parochin of Suddi" is mentioned in 1652 (IDR., p. 247), and Alexander Hossack is recorded in Fortrose, 1726 (HP., II, p. 336). John Hosack was author of Mary Queen of Scots and her accusers 2 v., 1869—74.
