May be from Norman de Hosse, i.e. of Houssaye in Normandy. A family of this name possessed the manor of Craigie in Kyle, during the reigns of Malcolm IV and William the Lion. Walter Hose succeeded his father in the manor in the beginning of the reign of William the Lion. The father of Walter, who is not named in the record, had granted the church of Craigie half a carucate of land and Walter granted it another carucate, and before 1177. for the salvation of the souls of his father and mother he granted the monks of Paisley the church of Craigie with all its lands and pertinents. Johannes Hose, younger brother of Walter, also appears as parson of the church of Craigie. Johannes Ose, probably a son of Walter, witnessed the concession by Gilbert, son of Henry St. Martin, of the land of Fulton to the monks of Paisley, c. 1208—33, and as Johannes Huse witnessed, c. 1210, the gift by Malcolm Loccard of six acres in Symuntun to the same monks. In 1272 the church of Craigie was confirmed to the monks of Paisley by Thomas de Cragyn, the son and heir of John Hose, who had assumed his surname from the lands. The family ended in two heiresses, Christian and Matilda, daughters of Sir John Hose, the eldest of whom married Sir William Lyndsay, a younger son of Sir David Lyndsay of Crawford. In 1272 there is a further confirmation of the gift of the church of Craigie to the monks of Paisley by Walter de Lyndsay, miles, "filius et heres quondam Christiane Hose et Matildis soror ejusdem Christiane, heredes quondam domini Johannis Hose militis." The only records of the family are contained in the charters in the Registrum Monasterii de Passelet, p. 50, 71,231—233.
