An old Shetland surname of Norse origin. It is a corruption of Aassieson, "the son of Aassi," a form of Oswald which see. In Shetland the name is generally pronounced in accordance with its original spelling, Aassiesen, and less correctly Osison and Hosison, whence the form Hoseason. The name has no connection whatsoever with the biblical Hosea. Elias Hoseason in Stevenson's Kidnapped was captain of the trading brig the Covenant" in which David Balfour was kidnapped.
