This name is of Cromwellian origin in Ireland: it is believed to be derived from Horseford, a place in Norfolk, England, though some English families so called came from Horseforth in Yorkshire; and the fact that Horsford is sometimes used as a synonym of Hosford corroborates the belief. It is remarkable in two respects: it is found almost exclusively in west Cork and though the rural population has declined in the past century, the Hosfords living in a rural district, have markedly increased in numbers.
