Hoskin Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
i) Bapt. 'the son of Osmund, —or— Osgood,' or 'Osberne.' There can be little doubt about this derivation. The aspirate is commonly found in names beginning with vowels; compare Hoddy for Oddy, or Hosgood for Osgood, or Hodson for Odson. This being settled the rest is easy. Oskin must be a diminutive like Wilkin or Watkin, and the only question is, Was it a diminutive of Osmund, Osgood, or Osberne? The 'g' in Hosking is excrescent.
Osekin (without surname), London, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
Robert Osekin, London, ibid.
(a) Bapt. 'the son of Roger,' from nick. Hodge, diminutive Hodgekin, corruptly pronounced Hotchkin, then Hoskin, with excrescent 'g' Hosking. I merely suggest this as a possibility. All evidence is in favour of (1).
1 = Hose3 (q.v.) + the English diminutive suff. -kin.
2 a contraction of one of the common Os- names with added H- and + the English diminutive suff. -kin.
3 confused with Hodgkin, q.v.
(English, Welsh) Descendant of little Os or Hos, pet forms of Osbert, Osgood, Osmund and similar names; sometimes a corruption of Hodgkin, q.v.
A softened pronunciation of Hodgkins.
(Cornish British) From Heschen or Hosleyn, the place of rushes, the sedgy place.
