son of Richard,' which see, from Hud(d), formerly a common pet form of the name. James Hudson, charter witness, 1466 (Kelso, 531). John Hudsone and Willie Hutson were tenants on land of the Abbey of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 524,530), and in the same year William Hutson in Leith acknowledged the king and regent (RPC., I, p. 562). In 1660 there is record of payment to William Hereson in Stitchill (Stitchill, p. 20), and Adam Hutson is recorded in Smailholme, 1637 (Lauder). Hutson is common in Dunblane from 1612 (Dunblane). Hutsone 1591. (2) Hutson and Hudsone were also spellings of Huchon, a diminutive of Hugh. In 1524 and 1527 Hugh Ross of Kilravock appears as Hutson and Hudsone Rose (Cawdor, p. 125,148, 149).
