From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

HOWBURN: Probably from Howburn near Carham, or from Holburn near Lowick (in 1278 Houburne). David de Houhburne granted 'piscaria de Orde et piscaria de Blakewel,' 1220 (Kelso, 55, 57, 61). James de Houburn is recorded in 1254 as holding a quarter of one knight's fee (Bain, I, 372). Thomas de Houburne, evidently an Englishman, canon of St. Andrews, was ousted from the Priory of Pitinweme 'by the Scots,' 1306—7 (Bain, II, 1964—1965). John de Howburne is in record in 1387 (Laing, 78). Sir Thomas Hoborne was vicar of Fossoquhy, 1510 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 279), Patrick Howbrone and his son had a grant of the fruits of the kirk of Fossoquhy in 1511 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 259), and Andro Howburn, Patrick Howburn, Robert Howburn, and Peter Howburn, had a tack of the fruits of three-quarters of the kirk of Fossoquhy in 1545 (ibid., II, p. 32—33). John Howburne is mentioned as holding land in Hawick also in 1545 (RMS., II,3107). Andrew Hawberin of Tuliboill and Robert Hawburn were witnesses, 1546 (Rollok, 5), and Andrew Hoberne was tenant of Tuliboll, 1561 (PSAS., lx, p. 77). Robert Howbroune is recorded in Newtoune, 1608 (RRM., I, p. 71), and Jeanna Howburne and Sicilia Howburne were heirs portioners of Andrew Howburne in Drochellis, 1610 (Inquis., 484,485). Holburne 1476. James Holburn, elder in Menstrie, 1675 (Edin. Apr-.) and Sir James Holburn was ruling elder in the parish of Logie, 1718 (Logie I, p. 152).
