Local, perhaps from some obsolete place name in Ayrshire. William Howe, witness in Brechin, 1519, appears in 1526 as William Howye, sergeand of the town, and two years later he is William Howie (REB., II, 172,180—181). Johnne Howy, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder, 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). Dand Howie or Howy was tenant on land under the Abbey of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 522), James Hwi was in Dunfermline, 1569 (Dunfermline), and Robert Howe or Howie, principal of Marischal College, Aberdeen, author of De Aeterna Dei Procidentia, Basel, 1591, Latinized his name Hovaeus. Archibald Howie was burgess of Glasgow, 1625 (Burgesses), John Howie was retoured heir of Andreas Howie in Meikle Warkhill, Oyne, Aberdeenshire, 1634 (Retours, Aberdeen, 224), and James Howie in Foggihillock, Ayrshire, 1667, appears again in 1672 as James Hui (Corsehill, p. 74,102). Paterson records a local tradition that the Howies of Ayrshire sprang from a family of Waldenses who took refuge in Scotland (Ayr, III, p. 245), but no proof is offered for the belief. The best known of the name in Scottish history is John Howie (1736—1793) of Lochgoin, author of the Scots worthies. compare How.
