The word 'Hoşana' (Latin: osanna, Greek: ὡσαννά, hōsanná) is of Aramaic origin. It comes from the shortened form of the Hebrew הושיעה נא (hôşi'a-nâ) which is הושע נא (hôşia-nâ) in Hebrew. Its meaning is 'Save us!' When Jesus entered Jerusalem, it was a cry used by the pilgrims from Galilee. It appears in places in the Tanakh where prayers for salvation to God are made. In the New Testament, it appears in many places. For example, 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!', 'Hosanna, blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord', 'Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest!' These examples show how it is used as a cry of joy. However, its usage in the New Testament differs from its use in the Tanakh, and this has led to different interpretations of its purpose in the New Testament.
