Jon Johannesson was born in Iceland on 21 Apr 1861. Johannesson is a patronymic and means that he was the son of Johannes. He and his family were living on the farm Hrappsstadir in 1893 when they emigrated from Iceland to Canada.

Jon settled in Selkirk, Glenboro and Swan River Manitoba. Since so many people had the same last name, to avoid confusion, he changed his last name to Hrappsted after the family farm in Iceland. When the children went to school the teacher had them spell their name Hrappstead. Now both spellings are used. He used the name John Hrappstead and as far as is known he and his descendants are the only people using this surname.

There are three farms in Iceland named Hrappsstadir, John's was about 10 km south of the town of Vopnafjordur in north east Iceland. These farms are named after the Norse Viking Hrappur who came to Iceland in the settlement period 1100 years ago. His story is told in the Laxdaela Saga. His own farm was in the north west of Iceland.

Hrappur is found in Old Norse as Hreppir. Related to the Old Norse verb, hrapa, meaning 'to throw down', 'overthrow', or 'fall down'. Compare with the modern Icelandic, hrappur, meaning 'rascal', or 'scamp'.
