This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Hugh,' from diminutive Hugolin (v. Hewling or Hewlings, where many and conclusive instances are given). Hullin and Hullings are the American forms, the g being excrescent, as in Jennings.
'After waiting two months, Mr. Holroyd at length obtained employment with the respectable firm of merchants, Messrs. Hullin and Woodruff. Mr. Hullin was president of the Bank of Louisiana': Life of Abraham Holroyd, poet and antiquary, Old Yorkshire.
