A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

(English) Descendant of Hurlbert (army, bright); one proficient with a hurlebatte in the medieval game of hurling; one who used a hurlbat in combat.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

HURLBAT: Halliwell, citing Howell, defines hurlebat as a kind of dart, which is clearly a misapprehension. I find the word in Boyer's English-French, and Ainsworth's Latin Dictionaries. The latter gives it as the equivalent of the classical ccesstus, and describes it as "a kind of club, or rather thong of leather, having plummets of lead fastened to it, used in boxing." But there was another implement of sport used in the time of Elizabeth for the game of ' hurling ' which was called the "clubbe or hurlebatte." For a description of hurling, see Hone's Strutt's Sports and Pastimes, pp. 98-99. This surname, like Shakespeare, Wagstaffe, &c., comes from some feat of strength on the part of the original bearer.
