HUSBAND: 'Husband' probably corresponded to English 'yeoman,' one owning and himself cultivating a piece of land. According to Cosmo Innes (Legal antiquities, p. 242) a husband was the fanner of a husbandland of 26 acres. In 1437 we have mention of John Parvus, husband, in the vill of Tullibothy (SCM., V, p. 261). Alexander Husband was prepositus of Invemairn in 1291 (Bain, II, p. 543), and in 1295 he was one of those who attested to the valuation of Kylrauoc and Estirgedeys (Cawdor, p. 3; Rost p. 30). Andrew Husband was a weaver in Perth in 1506. Andrew Husband, portioner of Nether Kincairdney, had sasine as heir of his father John Husband, of an annual rent from lands of Stralochie in the parish of Capeth, 1679 (DPD., I, p. 262). John Husband in Snaigo, Kirkcudbright, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 778). James Husband in Craigend, 1695, and eight more of the name are in Commissariot Record of Dunkeld.
