In Scotland during the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth centuries Hutcheoun (ch sibilant) regularly appears as a Christian name, the equivalent of Hugh or Hew in the vernacular. Hucheon Fraser, lord of the Lovet is mentioned in 1422 and in 1510 a succeeding Lord Lowat is named Heow (Beauly, p. 305,323). Huchon Ker appears in 1467 (RD., p. 359), and Huchown the Ross, 1481. Sandy Huchose appears in Aberdeen, 1497 (CRA., p. 425). 'John Hutching wyfe' was a 'kaikbakster' in Stirling, 1525, and Helen Huchown was amerciat there in 1547 (SBR., p. 25, 47). James and Robert Huchone or Huchoun were tenants of the vill of Raffort, 1565 (REM., p. 444), and David Hutcheon was gardener in Fyweis Wallis, 1596 (SCM., I, p. 92). John Hucheon, burgess of Aberdeen, 1598 (NSCM., I, p. 93). George Huchone, trade burgess of Aberdeen, 1642 (ROA., I, p. 232). William Hutcheon from Auchterless was killed in the first Great War (Turriff). The name was early borrowed into Gaelic and became there Huisdean or Uisdean (pronounced like 'ocean'). This spelling is due to the fact that Gaelic lacks the sound of ch in church, so that in names borrowed from English it renders it sd pron. sht), thus Fletcher becomes Fleisdeir and Richard becomes Risdeart. In the Book of Lecan, compiled c. 1400, Clandonald of Sleat is referred to as Ciann Uisdinn, and in the description of the Isles of Scotland prepared for the use of James VI (c. 1577—95), the same clan is called "Scheall Hutcheoun, that is to say, the offspring of that man callit Hutcheoun" (Skene, CS., III, p. 432). As a Gaelic forename: Husceoun M'Inclerich, 1548 (RMS., IV, 204). As forename: Huchon Hulson in Ayr, 1471 (Friars Ayr, p. 54); Hugh alias Hucheoun Monro, 1628 (Retours, Ross, 183). Houcheon 1589, Hucheoun 1563, Hutchone 1616.
