From the occupation, a 'hind,' peasant, ME. hine, the d being excrescent. The earliest references to the name connect it with Glasgow. David Hyne or Hynde appears as burgess there between 1454 and 1460 (LCD., p. 179,252; REG., p. 412), and Robert Hyne in 1456 (REG., p. 406). George Hynd or Hynde was citizen of Glasgow, 1472, and Patrick Hyne was burgess of Linlithgow in the same year (Sc. Ant., XVII, p. 116,118). William Hynd held a land in Glasgow, 1496, and Christine Hynd held a tenement there in 1500 (REG., p. 493,501). Thomas Hynd and David Hynd, followers of the earl of Cassilis, were respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386), and Riche Hynd appears in Dunfermline, 1577 (Dunfermline).
