It is a name most commonly held by Parsis, persecuted descendants of Zoroastrians, who left Persia following the fall of the Sassanian empire to invading Arabs in the 7th century AD. Some claim that Parsis (people from Pars, Persia) have been in India for over 1200 years, but more conservative estimates suggest that migration in waves happened around a thousand years ago. Persian Zoroastrians landed on the coast of what is now Gujarat and settled there, slowly shifting to Bombay as it became a city. Many abandoned agriculture and trades for more urban occupations such as the professions and business.
