From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Bardsley says from Idle in Yorkshire, but our earliest reference points to a personal name as the origin. Idellus was chaplain in Glasgow, c. 1202—07 (RMP., p. 110). At a later date the surname is found chiefly in Aberdeenshire and in Angus. William Ydil was one of the temporary bailies of Elgyn, 1343, and in 1363 was burgess (REM., p. 290,313) William Ydil, a man of the duke of Albany, had a safe conduct in England, 1401 (Bain, IV, 584). William Ydill, charter witness, 1407, ippears again in 1410 as William Idille de Murebrakis, when he received a charter of part of Balcaly and Kyngerrok in Fife (RMS., I, 896,927). John Ydul, notary-public in Dundee, 1421, appears in 1425—34 as Ydile and Idill (REB., I, 62; 11, 42, 44; HP., II, p. 177: Panmure, II, 190). Master Walter Ydill, vicar of Inverurie, 1428, is doubtless Master Watt Ydill recorded in Aberdeen, 1442, mentioned again in 1455 as Walter Idill, canon of Aberdeen (CRA., p. 7; RAA., II, 104). Walter de Idil who was directed to resign the rectory of Logy in Buchan, 1437 (Pap. Lett., VIII, p. 645—6) and Walter Ydil de Tal, canon of Aberdeen, 1464 (RAA., II, 153), is probably the same person. Andrew Ydill was witness at Dudhope, 1572 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 144). Allexr. Yale, cordiner and deacon conveiner of the trades in Aberdeen, 1681 (ROA., l, p. 239), and William Idill, clerk of the Exercise of Alford, 1686 (Alford, p. 372). This sername in some instances has been merged in Yule, which see. Ydyll 1445.
